Health Technician (Fitter)

Purpose of the work is to successfully restore function or comfort to patients who would not otherwise have it by means of prosthetic an sensory aid appliances. This affects the patient's recovery and has a significant impact on the well-being of the patient. Other duties include but are not limited to:
Application of prefabricated appliances such as, but not limited to, lumbo-sacral supports, prosthetic socks and Sheaths, elbow and ankle supports, -elastic support hose, hand splints, soft knee braces, neck collars abdominal binders, trusses, and non-custom in-depth shoes. Measures body and limb segments appropriate to the item being fit, and select an off the shelf item, sized appropriately with appropriate model or design to the patient Incumbent will apply the item to body and limb segment, adjusting-as required. Enter progress notes of delivery and all patient and medical team contacts. Performs simple orthotic/prosthetic repairs, such as repairs to cuff's, suspension straps, shoes, using a wide variety of materials:
Repairs leather, metal, plastic and fabric components to artificial limbs and braces. Assists the Orthotic Lab personnel putting orthotic components together. This may involve placing sockets, feet and knees on prosthetic pylons according to instruction. Measures, fabricates and fits patients with orthotic and prosthetic devices Posts stock issues and packages/mails items to Patient's borne. Has contractual authority and is empowered to Obligate-the Government in procurement actions up to $3,000 for open market and $3000,00 under established PSS-Decentralized. Negotiates and awards purchase orders for the exclusive manufacture of unique equipment and devices, etc., are under the incumbent's purview. Administers small purchase orders that involve the use of instruments that are not firm fixed price (e g:
, time, and materials, labor hours, or oilier un-priced small purchase -orders). Work Schedule:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service; experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
Fabricating or fitting orthotic devices to unique patients with a wide variety of ailments; application of orthotic/prosthetic devices to complex and serious disabilities; designing a wide variety of types of prosthesis; accessing professional publications through internet and search engines; repairing orthotic appliances; application of prefabricated appliances such as limbo-sacral supports, prosthetic sock and sheaths, elbow and ankle supports, elastic support hose, hand splints, soft knee braces, neck collars, abdominal binders, trusses, non-custom in depth shoes, etc.; applying devices to body or limb segment, adjusting as required; and entering progress notes of delivery and all patient and medical team contacts. Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR Combination:
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
