Intermediate Care Technician (Emergency Department)

The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) works in the Emergency Department, of the Nursing Service for the Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHCS). ICT may be requested to float to other areas of the hospital due to staffing needs. Duties include providing assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen within an Inpatient & Outpatient Care Units. This may involve obtaining patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health related conditions that may impact the patient's health status. The incumbent will evaluate patients for emergency medical conditions, order appropriate diagnostic studies and perform a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the Nurse/Physician. Necessary interventions based upon patient symptoms and established protocols/standards of care should be part of the routine capabilities of this position. Other duties include, but are not limited to:
Operate specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus. -Perform procedures such as start peripheral, venipuncture, ear irrigation, enemas, splinting, suture removal -Perform diagnostics including vital signs, EKG, rapid strep swabs, urine dip, urine pregnancy test, visual acuity.-Provide administration of oxygen, basic IV fluids, nebulized medications (under the supervision of a physician, nurse, or other authorized health provider).-Perform venipuncture according to written protocols to ensure proper collection, labeling, handling and delivery of blood specimens to the lab.-Perform standard 12-lead EKGs and mounts tracings for interpretation.-Perform EKG Strip Interpretation including:
PR interval, QRS interval, QT interval, Rate determination, and Rhythm.-Perform A-Line, CVP, PA line set-up and calibration. Promotion Potential:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06.The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. Specialized Experience at the GS-06 Level:
Applicants must have One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to experience providing emergency medical response care, skills to perform specific tasks/tests/procedures to meet patient healthcare needs. Current BLS certification is highly desirable. At least one full year experience as a Army Combat Medic (68W), Navy Corpsman (HM), Air Force Pararescue or Medical Technician, Military EMT (B,I and P) or other medical Military Occupational Specialties (MOS). ACLS and PALS training must be successfully obtained within the first six months of hire. Specialized experience at the GS-07 Level:
Applicants must have One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-06) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to experience at a higher level, performing more independent tasks and duties with less supervision and training that would be required of a GS-6 level employee. Examples are assisting medical personnel in the evaluation of ambulatory patients seen within an inpatient care environment; assisting with life threatening procedures such as defibrillation, cardioversions, insertion of chest drainage tubes, initiation of mechanical ventilation to restore normal physiological functions, operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electro cardiographs and oxygen apparatus, experience as an Army Combat Medic (68W), Navy Corpsman (HM), Air Force Pararescue or Medical Technician, Military EMT (B,I, and P), or other medical Military Occupational Specialties (MOS).
